Înca de la începutul anului 2020 departamentul de Teledetecție al Institutului Național de Cercetare Dezvoltare pentru Optoelectronică a fost implicat în proiecte ale Agenției Spațiale Europene (ESA) legate de misiunea HERA. HERA este prima misiune de apărare planetară, parte a unui efort internațional de deviere a unui asteroid, realizat în colaborare cu NASA (misiunea DART- Double Asteroid Redirection Test).
